Audience Profile of Indie Rock
Age
This genre would target 15-21 year old's, as they are the young age of today's generation that have grown up watching the media evolve into the codes and conventions of Alternative indie/rock. for example you'll find cursing is involved in songs to get the songs point across in today's music which is something an older generation would frown upon. However in today's era the cursing just comes naturally in our vocabulary, therefore 15-21 years don't think much of it.
Education
The social demographic side of things it due to the age, that the target market for indie/rock would attend higher education or university. This is because they connect with the indie genre due to being a very independent age. overall the indie genre is all about the "Independent Freedom" which is what we strive to achieve. As students they would be money-less working hard hours with their part-time job and pulling all nighter's to get the homework done as well. Its a stressful time for these age groups 15-21.
Location
Indie/rock is a form of music genre that started in the USA, around the 1980's a form of rock genre streamed in England. However Indie/rock roots come from the genre, alternative rock from American undergrounds. In 1990, bands like Nirvana, Peal Jam and soundgarden became very mainstream within the US and bands like blur and oasis again was becoming more mainstream in the UK. Due to the big change of audience music taste changing to alternative rock hence the main stream in the US and UK in the 1990's. Taken that into account, I would believe the target audience would be living in urban areas, living the city life and expense of a city. A city can be quite suffocating sometimes because of the population in urban areas are quite large therefore the alternative music could be an escapism for city people. the atmosphere in the city is very fast tracked, everyone is in a rush worrying about every second. therefore making, living in the city stressful. Alternative music can be very chilled and relaxed therefore helping people relieve stress from the city.
Lifestyle
Due the fact we have established that our audience are students in university or higher education, Then you can sort of assume there lifestyle will be full time students and part time shop assistants or waitresses/waiter to help fund there nightlife, then using there student loan or grants to help them survive the day. They will be more then likely single in the long run and in short term being in small relationships but never being tied down due to the fact they meet new people everyday. Roughly have an income of £300-£600 per month but subtracting £250 of that into partying. They can be American or British citizens, more likely to be British as alternative indie rock is more popular in Britain. They like hanging out with friends and meeting new people on campus, not following the crowd, and doing their own thing independently. All because of what they believe in. They would also do extreme overtime to get more money although spending all night to meet work deadlines, therefore making them overtired and stressed. Therefore alternative indie/rock helps relieve their feelings and calms them out a bit. I can image they would drive typical student cars; Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen polo, Vauxhall Corsa, Renault Clio, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Yaris, Citroen C1/ Toyota Aygo/ Peugeot 107, Seat Ibiza, Kia picanto, Mazda 2, Ford KA.
Interest
The artist and the audience are more then likely artistic and creative in their own unique style of fashion and art. They usually have unusual hobbies that contradicts the stereotypical activities of their classmates. for example,Skateboarding, surfing, pub meetings with friends. They might be into fictional reading where they can get lost into a world and escape a real one. I also presume they binge watch TV shows and classic movies like the Breakfast Club, St Elmo's fire etc. and Parks and Recreation, Freaks and Geeks for TV shows. They would also self teach their self guitar, piano or ukulele. Addicted to funk food, like pot noodles, chocolate, crisps, fizzy drinks etc. I can imagine a good few are social smokers to help them be more confident to talking to people and help stress relief. When hanging with friend at parties etc. they may take the occasional marijuana, street name 'weed' to chill out. They would have a grunge style of clothing or retro style wearing indie and skater like clothing, the clothing brands that would attract the target audience are Vans, Enjoi, Etnies. Colours they would wear are black, dark reds, browns, dark greens, dark blues, nothing bright that makes them visible. They would 10% be participating the festival season during July to end of August, music festivals, movie festivals, food festivals etc. Mainly music festivals would attract a alternative indie rock audience as its there element, its their style, atmosphere their escapism.
Race/sex
There is no specific gender as there is an equal amount of females and males that listen to alternative indie rock. however its stylistic origins stemmed from Indie Rock and the 1960's girl-group pop. therefore the audience varied between men and woman. The ethnicity of the primary target audience are white. majority of the artist present within alternative rock are of a white ethnicity - in contrast to R&B/Hip Hop where many of the artist are of a black ethnicity. This follows the Blumer and Katz audience theory of personal identity because the target audience have the personal identity between themselves and the artists.
